Is there a more Irish word for hospital? an t-ospidéal is just so ugly with it's broad and slender conflict

There's - an otharlann (fem2) - which means the infirmary.

I wonder why is the "o" added? As you can also say "spidéal", like in the Galway place name " An Spidéal". Actually it's common to say "aspicle" in Conamara (not sure of spelling).

FGB has an alternate form, óspaidéal, which obeys the caol-le-caol rule. That's closer to the Scottish Gaelic form of ospadal, which also obeys the rule. Perhaps the "i" crept in through confusion with the English word hospital.

The word apparently originated in Late Latin as hospitale, which was originally a guest house or inn, and only later took on the meaning of a place to care for the sick. Old French used both hospital and ospital (now hôpital or the related hôtel, where the circumflex, as usual, indicates the removal of an "s" that was no longer being pronounced).

Gaelic also has an older word, taigh-eiridinn, meaning something like "house of attendance", which looks as though it was somewhat of a translation of the concept behind the original Latin.

It's a word with quite a complicated history, it seems. There's even a school called Christ's Hospital. I see that the related word hospice is - ospís (bain2)
