Here's another short poem I'm trying to put into Irish - if you have any suggestions or corrections, I'd be glad to see them.

CODLAÍONN NA CAIT IN ÁIT AR BITH

Codlaíonn na cait in áit ar bith,
Ar bhord ar bith, ar chathaoir ar bith,
Ar barr an phianó, ar leac na fuinneoige,
I lár, in imeall,
I dtarraiceán oscailte, i mbróg folamh,
Is leor sin dóibh ina suí in ucht an duine ar bith
Toillte i mbosca cairtchláir,
San almóir le do chuid racaidí -
Áit ar bith! Is cuma leo!
Codlaíonn na cait in áit ar bith.

Cats sleep anywhere,
Any table, any chair,
Top of piano, window-ledge,
In the middle, on the edge,
Open drawer, empty shoe,
Anybody's lap will do,
Fitted in a cardboard box,
In the cupboard with your frocks -
Anywhere! They don't care!
Cats sleep anywhere.

I lár, in imeall, (or - “sa lár, ar an imeall”)
I dtarraiceán oscailte, i mbróg folamh,
*Is leor leo suí in ucht duine ar bith (no “an” before “duine”)
Toillte i mbosca cairtchláir,
San almóir (or “sa bpreas”) le do chuid racaidí (I’d say “gúnaí”)-
Áit ar bith! Is cuma leo!
Codlaíonn cait in áit ar bith

I’d prefer myself -
*Bíonn siad sásta in ucht duine ar bith (or “aon duine”)

Go raibh maith agat.

My favourite edition of this poem is the one illustrated by Anne Mortimer. It is has been translated into Italian, but the translation isn't very faithful to the original. What has complicated this for me is that I have already translated it into French.

Les chats dorment n'importe où
Sur une table, sur une chaise,
En haut du piano, sous la fenêtre,
Au milieu, sur le bord
Dans un tiroir ou dans une chaussure vide
Sur n'importe quel genou
Coincés dans un carton
Dans un placard avec les habits -
N'importe où! Ils ne s'en soucient guère!
Les chats dorment n'importent où.

Was the original poem in English?

If you want to say "the cats" then leave it as you originally had it "na cait".

Of course the original is in English, but if you've already translated it once, that influences you when you want to translate a second time. That's what I feel about it anyway.

In Italian, the title is - Dove dormono i gatti? which means Where do cats sleep? - which for me isn't right.
