I love this hymn! We just sang it at the St. Patrick's Mass at St. Joseph's in Mountain View! This is a beautiful recording.

I have a version just slightly different, using mánna for "plains" in the second verse, instead of maighthe.

Red, yours sounds like an attempt to "lighten up" on the criticism of the druids, which I think is a good idea, since the version I had is pretty heavy-handed about them being totally evil.

Could well be. I only know it from the Irish mass in Mountain View, where we sing this as a recessional every year.

I like the way this one goes...especially when you consider that most of the druids weren't crushed or conquered, but came over to Christianity quite willingly (in fact, some of them even before Patrick!). St. Patrick is even quoted as saying "Christ is my druid."

New to the forum. In the song Dochas linn naomh Padraic etc. my school memory of the fifth line is 'Sé cur chríoch le draoícht-a, draoícht-a dorcha gan aon mhaith - which roughly translates as, 'He it was that put an end to magic, dark (black) magic without any good in it'.--- has anybody any recollection of this variant. It's largely saying the same thing anyway. richmerne
