I'm trying to work out the best way to say to an acquaintance who couldn't remember when we first met something along the lines of "we met in San Francisco last year" (where "we" is the other person and myself).

I thought of "bhuail muid le chéile" but that sounds a bit to my ear as if I'm describing a planned meeting rather than simply encountering each other by accident and exchanging pleasantries. I finally settled for "bhuail mé leat anúraidh in San Francisco" because it was a conversation and I didn't want to waste time searching for a phrase when I had one to hand, but is there a better way to do this?

Perhaps simply adding 'trí sheans' solves your problem? 'Bhuail muid le chéile trí sheans'.

Casadh ar a chéile muid or Cuireadh in aithne dá chéile muid ('met' in the sense of 'were introduced').

Redwolf, obviously you learned, as I did, that 'buail le' is for 'to meet by arrangement' and 'cas ar' for 'to meet by chance'. But have a look at 'meet' in 'Foclóir.ie'. 'Buail le' seems to be used for chance encounters also. Whether this is a "modern" usage or 'twas ever thus, I have no idea, but 'twould seem 'Bhuail muid le chéile' is good to go.

(No fada in anuraidh though)

Both of your examples are fine, I think. You could also say: casadh ar a chéile muid...

Slán,

Casadh ar a chéile muid (in San Francisco anuraidh).

I would also vote for this one!
