I don't know where the woman with a fish's tail legend came from, but definitely not from Ireland or Scotland.

Scandinavia, I guess, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid

Have a look at this -
Selkies in Irish folklore by Janna King
http://born-as-glitter.org/chai/selkiepaper.htm
and Roan Inish is of course seal/selkie/rón island though I would have thought that it should be the other way round - Inis róin

Nice article. Yes, you'd think Inis Róin would have been anglecised as Inishroan.

I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

There's - The Mermaids Singing by Lisa Carey, where the story tales place on Inis Muruch - though it probably should be murúch, but anyway I think it must be a made-up name as it's not on Logainm.

"Murúch" in de Bhaldraithe, "Muruach" in Ó Dónaill...too bad those two guys didn't collaberate a little more closely!

When I posted last night, I knew how to say it but was unsure of the spelling. I couldn't find it in FGB (I was tired and so must have passed right over it), so I looked up "Merrow" in Ó Dónaill. Thought the spelling looked a little odd given the pronunciation, but who am I to argue with old Niall?

Ó Dónaill's and de Bhaldraithe disagree on many things, for instance, in his examples, de Bhaldraithe often uses relative forms (in -s), synthetic endings (as those that are used in Munster) etc, while Ó Dónaill doesn't.
But de Bhaldraithe's dictionary is much older (1958) while Ó Dónaill's was published in 1976 or sthg like that.
