I recently started reading Peig, perhaps the book will tell me more but I was just googling her life and someone on Daltaí said her grandfather (paternal) was English. Is this true? Also in the translators note (of the English version) it says that she was born into an English speaking family (though one generation removed from Irish), but in the book itself it says how when she was in school and an a new teacher came in speaking English and she had to rely on Cáit-Jim to help her understand. It later says when people came to view father owens grave and asked her and cáit-jim for directions though she understood she couldnt reply in English and had to rely on Cáit-Jim. So surely her home language was Irish?

By the way its a fine book! I have it in both lamguages but but the Irish is too hard for me now and I dont want to take the enjoyment out of it by going through it with a dictionary.
