Is maith liom Ciarán freisin, bheadh sé sin go hiontach mar is é an t-ainm atá ar an athair ach ní mhaith leo ainmneacha 'sentimental' srl

Sé costúm na nIudach (na Akenazi ar aon nós) nach n-ainmaítear aon pháiste i ndiaidh aon duine atá fós beo.

I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Is breá liom ainm "Ciaran". Dá mbeadh mac eile agam, chuirfinn ainm sin air. :nail: Is ainm laidir é.

If you live in Ireland, people are more likely to pronounce Irish first names more or less properly (even if they don't know Irish, they have heard of people called Ciarán etc). In other English-speaking countries I don't know, I guess most people wouldn't pronounce them properly, as Redwolf said.

When I have children, I wouldn't choose an Irish name (at least not the "official" first name) because I won't want their name to be badly pronounce all their life except by me or when we go to Ireland :darklaugh: I'd rather choose a French name that has an Irish and a Breton version :) (hope they won't be perturbed being called by 3 different names

Anyway, in my opinion children don't like when their first name isn't pronounced properly (especially when that happens 100 times a day) and might hate you for giving them a too strange name  I know some people in that case...

Breton names that have Irish equivalents? these are mainly Latin or Hebrew ones:
Yann / Seán or Eoin
Mari / Máire
Fin / Seosaimhín
Anna / Anna, Áine (although the latter isn't Hebrew but is commonly used as an equivalent of Anne)
Jojeb / Seosamh
Ronan, Renan / Rónán (this one is Celtic :) )
...

there aren't many Celtic names that exist both in Breton and in Irish actually, at least not the kind of names you would use now :)

What are the commonest pure Breton names that don't have a connection with English (or Irish).
