The word I've come across for this (in Cnósach Focal) is Máirín a' chlúimh ("Hairy Mary!") An mhuir chlúmhach is also given there (Dinneen lists this muir as a separate word from muir meaning "sea" - muir here may be a form of Máirín - see the discussion at https://blogs.transparent.com/irish/an- ... -an-mheim/).

Most dictionary entries for caterpillar are rather lame. What words are you familiar with for this?

my grandma only had caterpillar most of the time, but one time she pointed at one and said in Ireland they'd call it máirín a'chlúimh (thank you for the spelling). I suppose she found 'caterpillar' easier.

cnuig = cnuimh in LASID for Coolea should mean "maggot".

It's also used to mean caterpillar, at least today in Corca Dhuibhne.

Thank you. Good info. The plural should be cnuímhe, pronounced /kə'ni:/, as per LASID, but there is a chance you may have heard cnuimheanna.

I have heard for the singular all of cnuig, cnuimheog and cnuimh.

If cnuig people say cnuigeacha or cnathacha as the plural, cnuige as genitive
If cnuimheog people say cnuimheoga, cuimheoige as genitive
If cnuimh they say cnathacha or cnuimheanna, cnuimhe/cnuí as genitive
