Hi! I’m a little confused about the correct Ulster pronunciation of “foighne”

I know that if pronounced the way it’s actually spelled (in Standard), it would be “FY•nyuh”

But Teanglann.ie seems to pronounce it “fwidge” … which I’m assuming comes from the alternate word for patience “foighid”…

But, even then, it seems like it would be pronounced “fwydge” …am I hearing the pronunciation wrong? Sometimes I don’t trust my own ears. :??: Thanks a lot in advance! :)

Yes, 'foighid' is the Ulster version. You're hearing it fine, though the vowel sound is somewhere between 'late and 'let'.I don't know if the pronunciation reflects an older spelling ' Lughaidh or Labhrâs might know. The adjective is 'foighdeach' (fwehdyah). Teanglann gives the alternative form 'foighde' which is also the genitive
Of 'foighid', but doesn't mention 'foighid'. And 'foighid' seems to be the Connacht form too, to judge by the pronunciation on Teanglann.

So it's 'foighid' in two of the dialects, yet they took 'foigne' as the standard.

It's 'foighid' in the seanfhocal: Coimhéad fearg fhear na foighde

The form "foighid" can be found in the old Ulster literature (beginning of the 20th century), you'll find many examples in the database Tobar na Gaedhilge made by Ciarán Ó Duibhín.

Lughaidh I think Rosie wants to know if it is a short vowel or not or a diphthong. How would you transcribe foighid?
