Looking for help on a translation for a memorial for my Grandfather who recently passed. Tried Google translate but as I'm sure you all know not the best resource for correct translations.

The phrase I'm looking to get translated to standard Irish is:

" How sweet it is"

Google translates answer is:

"Cé chomh milis is atá sé"

Any help on confirming or what the correct translation would is super appreciated. Would like to have it engraved for his memorial as it was his favorite saying.

It is almost correct. But "cé" is used in questions only.

Without cé:
Chomh milis is atá sé! = How sweet it is!

With cé:
Cé chomh milis is atá sé? = How sweet is it?

Instead of the clause "is atá sé" (lit. "as he/it is") you can also use "leis" (lit. "as it/him")
Chomh milis leis! = How sweet it is!
Cé chomh milis leis? = How sweet is it?

Milis -is used only for something tasting sweet. I don't think that is the meaning you require.


Nach bhfuil sé iontach? = Isn't it brilliant?

Is breá liom é = I love it

Tá sé aoibhinn. = it is blissfull

When my Grandfather would say it it was it was in regards to great moments and simple pleasures in life.
Such as a great glass of wine or a day on the river fishing. Basically it was in reference to how sweet life is.

Would that context change the translation in any way?

The adjective aoibhinn, which Bríd Mhór has used above, is ideal for this. The dictionary gives its meaning as blissful/delightful/pleasant/glorious/great/lovely etc. depending on context. As a translation of 'Life is sweet' the dictionary offers Is aoibhinn bheith beo -literally 'It's bliss(ful)/ lovely etc to be alive'.
