OK, I believe the following two sentences are correct:

I have to practice == Tá orm cleachtadh
I have to practice my Irish == Tá orm mo chuid Gaeilge a cleachtadh

with the "a" being needed before "cleactadh" in the second sentence because the verbal noun has an object, whereas "a" is not needed in the first sentence because there is no verbal noun object. Do I have this right??

Is this correct?? And how would I say

In modern standard Irish the pronoun is generally used (and taught):

I want to hurt myself/him/her/them - Tá uaim mé féin/é/í/iad a ghortú

The possessive adjective - mo/do/a etc. - can be used instead, but is more common in older texts and !older speakers:

Tá uaim a ghortú/a gortú/a ngortú. No accents. You're confusing this with I'm hurting him/her/them:

Tá mé á ghortú/á gortú/á ngortú

Either (a = "his/her,their"):
Tá uaim a ghortú / a gortú / a ngortú

or (a = "to"):

Sorry to hijack your thread but I was just curious if i wanted to say "I would like to go back" would it either be "ba mhaith liom dul air ais" or "ba mhaith liom a dul ar ais"? Thanks

Caoimhín already answered the question, but in case you are wondering why, the answer is whether the verb is transitive or intransitive (aka whether it has an object or not)
so:
ba mhaith liom thú a mharú
ba mhaith liom bás a fháil
(both are transitive)
ba mhaith liom fanacht ar an saol
ba mhaith liom labhairt le saoi leighis
(both are intransitive)

"to be" is always séimhithe so here, even though it is neither transitive nor intransitive, it will be lenited always
ba mhaith liom (a) bheith sásta
ba mhaith liom (a) bheith pósta faoi cheann bliana
