I've got a nice one for you all... I teach Taekwon-Do and at the start of each class we say the international Taekwon-Do oath in English. One of the kids pointed out that in other countries they say this in their native language.

As we have a large proportion of kids from a particular Gaelscoil they asked why we can't say the oath as Gaeilge. I am not quite beginner but not quite intermediate so I thought I'd try here, I have made a start but I could be completely wrong.

The oath as Bearla:

I will observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do
I will respect the instructor and seniors
I will never misuse Taekwon-Do
I will be a champion of freedom and justice
I will build a more peaceful world

My starting attempt as Gaeilge:

Seasfaidh mé le na hairteagal Taekwon-Do
Measfaidh mé an teagascóir agus na sinsir
Ní mí-úsáidfidh mé Taekwon-Do riamh
...
Tógfaidh mé domhan níos síochanta

I'd appreciate your help on this...

My attempt (which I'm sure needs some more work and correction)

Glacfaidh mé na nósanna Taekwon-Do
Beidh meas agam ar an múinteoir agus na sinsir
Ní bhainfidh mé mí-úsáid as an Taekwon-Do (dTaekwon-Do?)
Beidh mé i mo laoch ar son saoirse is cirt
Déanfaidh mé saol níos siochánta

I think you'd need le with glac, i.e., glacfaidh mé leis na ...

You have to repeat the pronoun in Irish, hence ar an múinteoir agus ar na sinsir.

Ní bhainfidh mé mí-úsáid works, but drochúsáid might be clearer?

Tweaking:

Coimeádfaidhdearbhphrionsabail Taekwon-Do.
Beidh meas agam ar an teagascóir agus ar na sinsir.
thabharfaidhdrochúsáid as an Taekwon-Do.
Beidh mé mar laoch ar son na saoirse is an chirt.
Déanfaidh mé saol níos síochánta.

Await further input ...

I prefer "Ní bhainfidh mé..." to "Ní thabharfaidh mé...".

an múinteoir - has a nicer ring to it too. :)

Yes, "instructor" is a bit of martial arts jargon, though, closer to what the Asian languages use.

No one else has said it yet, but it's just plain cool that the kids would be the ones to suggest using Irish for the oath. It may not exactly evidence the oncoming total resurgence of Irish, but I take it as a really promising sign.

Very cool that this came from the kids. Where is this Taekwon-Do class I wonder? briano, if you are still keeping an eye on this thread, if you are doing more than the oath through Irish, you could market the fact that you use Irish in the class; some people won't care, but some will like it and help to promote it.
