The is é is emphatic, and the whole sentence means "I can't wait to go back there again". Leaving off the is é would not sound right in Irish - it would produce a dull sentence that is just a literal translation of the English. Possibly you could argue the OP's original English sentence, "it is my wish to be there again", is insipid, and so requires an insipid Irish sentence (is fada liom é), but I think the original sentence is not quite right here - and so if we translate the sentence it should have been ("I can't wait to go back"), the emphasis is required in the Irish.

Tá "I can't wait to" ar cheann de na dóigheanna lena aistriú, cinnte (is minic é tugtha agamsa mar aiistriúchán ar Is fada liom) ach ní hé an t-aon dóigh amháin é.

Foclóir.ie:

-He longed to see her - B'fhada leis go bhfeiceadh sé í
-I longed for a good night's sleep - B'fhada liom go bhfaighinn oíche mhaith codlata
-I can't wait for them to come - Is fada liom nó go dtiocfaidh siad

Déarfainn féin go mbeadh "I can't wait" rud beag neamhfhoirmiúil taobh le "It is my wish".

See pages 16 and 17 at http://archive.org/stream/cu31924026785 ... 5/mode/2up for an explanation - and this is a better source than focloir.ie

Patrick, you seem to have missed my point. I wasn't disagreeing with your use of is é, which I, too, thought more natural. I said this and more in my post but I see it got truncated during editing unfortunately. In my original post I'd suggested the possibility of omitting is é in the (I see now, mistaken) assumption it was for a tattoo, where "shorter" is better and cheaper.

My point - and it's probably only a minor one - was that you said that the translation of (is é) is fada liom was "I can't wait" suggesting, by implication, it seemed to me, that "I long" was wrong - hence my inclusion of the translations from Foclóir.ie. My point was that "I long" was more appropriate in the context of Annabeth's request than "I can't wait" . And on pp17 & 18 of your book is é is fada liom is translated as "I long".
