In the songbook I have, for the third line it has -
Cailíní maiseach go gealgáireach gléasta

Ceolta Gael 2 (Mánus Ó Baoill - Ossian/Musicroom) Do you not have a copy of that, Redwolf ?

I see that on Mudcat, they give another version by Pádraigín Ní Uachacháin and I also know of the version by her (late) sister Eithne (Bridgid's Kiss)

Cailíní maiseacha bángheala gléigeal

That's the version I know too, franc, but it's not what they're singing, and I need to be sure the words match.

This is one of those songs that have umpteen versions (including two different tunes that I know of...quite possibly more)

Alas, my copies of both Ceolta Gael 1 and Ceolta Gael 2 have disappeared...I don't know what happened to them, but I suspect I loaned them to someone (now if I could only remember who!)

Is it not cailíní maisithe? That's both what I'm familiar with and what they're saying.

My hearing is not the best, but listening to that it does indeed sound like:

cailíní maisithe bán-gheala gléasta

with 'maisithe' pronounced fully (with the 'e' at the end) and with an 'a' after 'bán' - 'bán - a - gheala'

Something like the way we say 'an-mhaith' as 'an-a-mhaith'

So I am inclined to agree with 'bán' for that missing word.
