In the States, people are often unaware that Irish is still spoken. In fact, a surprising number of people are unaware that the Irish have ever spoken anything but English! (I actually had one person ask me "Is that like Old English?" Yes, he's still alive. Deafened, but alive.

What I've finally started telling people when they question my interest in Irish is it's like music. I don't spend hours practicing the harp because it's "practical." Sure, I play a gig here and there, for the fun of it, but I'm never going to earn my bread with it. I do it because it's beautiful and I love it.
