I know 2 Fulbright winners and they were not affiliated with any university programs. Faber was another winner and he went to Oideas Gael, He should be able to provide you with details, Redwolf and I really would urge you to apply

When I was 17 years old I moved to El Salvador for a summer to learn Spanish. One of the first things one of the men of the house did was to take me in a room and teach me every colloquialism for every part of the body, every crudity and every vulgarity. He did this to help me not exactly blurt something out that would make those around me feel uncomfortable. I would be happy for anyone on this list to private message me with such a list. Since I'm going back this coming summer to the Gaeltacht it would be nice to know these to avoid some embarrassment.

On a related matter, one of the funniest things I ever remember hearing was the TOTAL RUCKUS caused when one of my gringo friends went to Mexico with his soon to be Mexican bride. He was thrilled and quite proud of his own ability to speak Spanish and proudly announced to the family (including grandma) at some point in the visit that his soon to be wife was "embarasada" about something or other. He figured it meant "embarrassed" as that is the English cognate. It in fact means "pregnant". The grandmother screamed out and began crying. Brothers were getting fairly pissed off and the father was beside himself before someone pointed out that he was just an ignorant gringo that didn't know the proper words to use. This stuff can get funny at times if you live through it. It's not a bad idea to talk about brollach, cac etc on this forum. :stoning:

Might as well ask here since it seems to be the best place to ask a low brow question, but what is the difference between ucht, brollach and cíoch exactly. I know they are all different words for breast, but what exactly is the difference?

And you can throw cliabhrach into that mix! :pages:

Can you imagine walking into a drug store and asking "en Espanol' for un pene, when you really wanted a un peine? It took a few minutes for the employees to figure what I wanted. I bet I made their day.

Have you heard of the English guy who went into a pharmacy in Germany and said that he wanted to buy a gift for his wife. And they called the police.

I read a funny thread on one of these forums a while back involving foreplay and how that's done or expressed with other nationalities. I think a guy from Ireland said he basically spoke calming tender words to his wife before the act. I think it was something like.........

BRACE YERSELF BRÍD! :panic:

Maria Trapp tells some funny stories about German speakers learning English in her book "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers," and particularly mentions the danger of using words that sound similar to words in your native language with the assumtion that they mean the same things. She tells of one lady who was out shopping for vegetables and was outraged at the cost of cauliflower at a particular grocer. The woman said "Behold your cauliflower! I can become cauliflower around the corner for X cents!"

Have you guys heard the one about the fellow from South America who traveled to San Francisco on business? When he arrived in the city, he realized that his wife had forgotten to pack any socks for him, so he went to Macy's to buy some. Unfortunately, the poor fellow had minimal English, so he had to resort to pantomime to show the clerk what he wanted. She brought out item after item...shoes, boots, slippers, etc. Finally she showed up with a pair of socks.

"Eso! Sí que es!" exclaimed the man.

The disgruntled clerk replied "well, if you can spell it, why didn't you just say it"

Go raibh maith agat! You guys have saved me from starting a thread with some stupid title like "Breasts in Irish".
