(The interesting thing about the American aversion to the word "toilet" is that "toilet" itself is in fact a euphemism. The term comes from the French (faire la) toilette "to have a wash/groom oneself". )

in French we say "les toilettes" ("the toilets") to say "the toilet" (even when there's only one room).
And "faire sa toilette" = to have a wash. But they are almost considered completely different words because they are used in a different way and mean completely different things.

I agree that young children do not initially have the capability to use some of the phonemes associated with 'proper' words. I don't have very strong feelings on this one way or another, but avoiding 'baby words' certainly didn't hold my kids back in terms of speech development. My feeling is that when adults use baby words, we are mimicking the children when it should be the other way around. Teaching your daughter sign language - now that is inventive and impressive.

Meanwhile we used a combination of what you are both saying. We avoided the baby words, I'm with Scooby on that one. With our first daughter, we planned to use baby sign language as Brendán did, but never got past a couple of basic signs - one being to tap your hand to mean 'more' was the most effective. She was able to ask for more food, more drink, more of the game, more music etc. Anyway, before the whole thing took off properly (we weren't the most dedicated to it), the real words started to come and we abandoned the sign language. Brilliant idea. Sounds like a bit of a fad, but actually makes perfect sense.

It's just as well everyone doesn't do the same thing with their children or it would make for a VERY boring world!

Babies understand words long before they can say them.
So sign language is a great way for them to express needs and emotions.
And people might have a lot less toddler tantrums if the kids weren't frustrated trying to get their point across.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Kind of like language learners! One of my great frustrations is I can still understand much, much more Irish than I can speak.

You need to spend a month in Ireland and immerse yourself. You could move from ILF house to ILF house for the month. That really sounds like you're on the run and staying in safe houses! Irish Liberation Forum?

and I'd even say, you need to spend a month in a Gaeltacht, because it'd be difficult to immerse yourself in the Irish language outside the Gaeltacht :)

Unfortunately, that is true. :( We'll have our immersion week in July with all that strange Donegal Irish....
I tried to tell my hands not to type it, but I couldn't resist. The devil makes work for idle hands!

I'll let you in on a little secret I have discovered, Scooby. Despite pretences to the contrary, there aren't any "adults" out there, just "children of all ages".

Donegal Irish isn't as strange as Munster and Connachta Irish, it's normal Irish. I wonder why they speak so strangely in Connachta and Munster ! Wouldn't it be simpler to speak like us?
