Couldn't agree more, people aren't stupid, they just need educating! I suppose at least he didn't change his name to O'Brien that would be selling out properly! On the most part the Brits pronounce his name well, ironically it's Gráinne Seoige's surname they can't get their head around, and that doesn't even have a fada!

English people have a big problem with my name though, I suppose not being famous doesn't help. I'm generally known as Sam, but i'm Somhairle in work because I work with another Sam and it confused the client's, well it turns out Somhairle confused them more!! Only today I got (from an English person), how do you pronounce that, Sorla (roughly) I said, he replied, what soil-er?! Jesus, it's Sam ok

Did this Ó not change to Uí in the past in some cases?

So I think, for example it would be: ainm Dhara Uí Bhriain?

How confusing would this be to English speakers?

in the genitive yeah, if your talking about the Ó Briain people you could say Muintir Uí Bhriain, only wifes would take it as a surname though i.e if he got married to Evelyn she'd be Evelyn Uí Bhriain.

An older form of Ó us Ua, so it could also be Ua Briain
