Hello. I am working on a tattoo idea. I lost my mother this past December and my wife and I are expecting our baby girl Grace in May. I would like the following phrase translated into Gaelic to include in a tribute tattoo "In a time of sorrow, I was granted Grace". I greatly appreciate any assistance given. Thanks.

I wonder if you actually want to 'translate' your daughter's name. It may make more sense to leave her name as it is, ie. Grace, the name you will call her, and just translate the rest of the phrase? That is a matter for you to decide though.

You won't be able to get the double meaning of "grace" into the translation.

Gráinne is an Irish name that is associated with the English name "Grace", i.e., once upon a time, the name Gráinne was "translated" into the English name "Grace" when anglicizing people's names.

However, Gráinne doesn't have the meaning "grace". The "grace" (of God, etc.) is grásta.

I'd replace Gráinne with grásta:

In aimsir bhrónach, deonaíodh grásta dom.

This has the simple meaning of being granted "grace" but the allusion is to the meaning of your daughter's name.

Thank you both. It seems the general syntax is in order from the comments I've received so far with some debate over the use of Grace. I like both ideas presented here actually. Not translating the proper name make that piece stand out and focuses more on the new child, but the use of Grasta focuses on God's intervention and flows well.

This may not suit, but I might as well throw it into the pot! What about adapting the original wording to incorporate both?

Perhaps something like:
'In a time of sorrow, I was granted grace with Grace.' In aimsir bhrónach, deonaíodh grásta dom le Grace.
