I saw that someone started a thread with the title "Conas a deireann tú...."
It inspired me to wonder about the best way to ask "How do you say..."

Personally, I have always favored:
Cén chaoi a ndeirtear X?
and
Cén chaoi a ndéarfása X?
the latter often after I say something that elicits surprise or imperfect understanding

It occurred that there could be better options. Mar shampla:
Cén chaoi a ndéarfaí X?
Cén chaoi ar cheart a rá X?
Céard é an tslí is fearr chun X a rá?

Would anyone be able to inform me? I imagine people who have actually studied with native speakers or spoken to them (a group I wish I were among) would have loads of experience saying this to them haha. There must be an option that is idiomatic, no?

In short, yes! I think it simply comes down to it being the same as in English too. Strictly speaking "how does/should one say x" is more correct that "how do you say x".

No "n" in déarfá or "deirtear" as you have, unless it's due to dialect? AFAIK it's "conas a déarfá" and "conas a déarfaí" and "conas a deirtear"

conas + direct relative
cén chaoi + indirect relative

Cén chaoi a ndéarfaí and Cén chaoi a ndeirtear

Grma...should have known that. Cén chaoi a bhfuil tú vs conas atá tú...

Also "cad é mar a...."

Cén chaoi a ndéarfaí X?

I tried this one in conversation yesterday and got some weird looks. Am I right then assuming this isn't said (haha pun intended?)

Any native speakers give you weird looks? I would suspect those who like to say "conas a deireann tú" might have given you those weird looks?

We say it that way too, the F is silent of course.

Cén chaoi a ndeirtear - is correct too.
