I was just looking at the books Anso agus ansiúd , (there was a link here some time ago for them, cant find them)

In the first exercise there is this paragraph

Dúirt sé a phaidreacha
Dúirt Íde paidreacha
Dúirt Tomás a phaidreacha
Dúirt tú do Phiadreacha

What does íde mean , in Dúirt Íde paidreacha ?

Íde is a name. There was a saint with the name, sometimes altered to Ita in English.

Like Lon Dubh said, in this context its a first name from St. Íde.

However, Íde is also a word that has different nuances of meaning i.e.

íde can mean abuse or treatment, particularly when being treated poorly i.e.

íde béil = a good telling off or giving out; literally mouth abuse.

Íde na spailpíní i ruith a n-aimsire = the (poor) treatment/ abuse of the spalpeens during their time of seasoned work.

But when used as a verb it means to deplete or use up i.e.

Tháid na stocaí iasc go léir ídithe = all the fish stocks have been depleted.

I was thinking that none of those definitions I found in the dictionary fitted and the only other use I knew of was Colaiste Íde, named after saint Íde. but I never thought it could be a persons name :)
