It's funny...there's a lot that goes on with Irish at UCSC, but they have no interest in mingling at all with people in the area who speak or are learning the language but are not affiliated with the university. Any overtures we've made in that direction over the years have been rebuffed. I wonder if they're afraid our American tongues will soil the purity of their research?

There often seems to be a disconnect between Academia and those who live and work outside it. In a wide range of things, not just Irish.

I agree, people don't know what scholars are working on and publish, and scholars, most of the time, don't make their research accessible to non-scholar people. It's a pity, especially in the domain of endangered languages!

very true, i often found in university that things would be written in a way which would obscure the meaning of the texts to those who were unfamiliar with the terminology of the subject.

It was a way of excluding those not in the elite group who were well versed in the subject and also helped define those who understood it as "experts" because it was not accessible to the average reader.

I remember having to study an anthropology paper in my first year in University, where the language and terminology used was so complex and obscure at to make the document completely illegible. It took me an entire weekend armed with a thesaurus and dictionary to rewrite the whole thing so I could understand it , and in the end none of the ideas expressed were in any way incomprehensible at all.

As a lot of Irish people think the Irish accent comes from the Irish language, so logically, it will be ok to talk with no attention to consonant contrasts that don't have any meaningful distinction in the person's head and so can't for the target language. Simply put, even if you had all the sounds of Irish in your English, both languages would make use of the sounds differently
