That's another thing they might say, yes. Also "go hiontach!" "ar fheabhas," etc.

You will hear "I've never seen the like" or "have you seen the like?", though, especially in parts of the South.

Yet another Southern Gaelicism, of which there are a number, probably derived from the speech of Scots-Gaelic immigrants, who were sometimes only a century or so away from Gaelic speaking ancestors, and also possibly from the Scots dialects spoken by Scottish slavers who brought slaves to South Carolina in the early days, and who also brought in pidgin Portuguese words like Negro and pickaninny, and may have introduced words like Mammy (mamaí).

Some other examples:
"There's not [or: There ain't] but [just/jes] two" and "I have to carry my date home"
and a strong tendency for Deep South Southerners to place stress on the first syllable of a word, as in: [At]LAN-uh, N[ew]OR-luhns, SO[u]TH Ca'lahna, NO[r]TH Ca'lahna, BUR-lin (Berlin, Georgia), AY-rab (Arab, Alabama), and words like AH-dee[uh] (=idea) and PO-lees (police).

As a Southerner, it's so nice to see these crop up. "I've never seen the like." makes total sense for me (and, in fact, can't really think of another natural way to express it). So does the deal with "but". I also definitely place stress on the first syllable. It's most noticeable in my speech (according to my friends) on the word "July".

I actually use the way folks in North Carolina pronounce "Thanksgiving" (THANKS-giv-un rather than "thanks-GIV-ing") and "McDonalds" (MACK-donalds) as an example of dialect differences when new learners seem to get a bit freaked out about the whole thing. That along with "y'all" vs. "you guys," "waiting on line" vs. "waiting in line," "carry" vs. "take/bring," "might could" vs. "maybe/possibly," etc. The idea of different dialects seems less intimidating when they see examples of the same concept in their own language.

I believe it really does too. I know "y'all" helped me a lot when starting to learn languages that make the plural-singular "you" distinction. And certain things in my English have really helped with Irish.

Also, double modals. They're quite fun. "Used ta could" might be my favorite. Or "Might should."

Well, thank y'all again, very enlightening discussion.

I begin to see where the common Australian spoken use of the word: youse - possibly came from Ireland.

a friend recently had a serious email confirming a travel booking to Darwin that included hlpfully in writing: yewes will need to change trains at......

The plural you is alive and well.
Will now tune in to RG4.
thanks again,
JulieA
