Dhera mhuise, I remember this old couple stopped me on the way to my aunts about 3 months ago and they looking for directions to the old church to go to a concert. I got that flustered that I hopped into the back seat and directed them step by step rather than give them the directions. In the town where I live there's lots of narrow, medieval streets, especially around the church they were going to and its only one way traffic for most of it so it was easier to hop into the car and show them than having to wreck my brain having to explain the way. It only took me two minutes out of my way. I do the oddest things when I'm flustered, I didn't really realise how inappropriate it was until we drove off with me in the back seat. They must have thought I was the biggest weirdo ever, well at least they won't be asking me for directions again. They seemed really grateful in the end though, they were a lovely old couple from Belfast.

For a moment I bet they thought you were hijacking the car.

Cas Timpeall/ iompaigh, nuair is féidir?

or what about the ordering autonomous tense as in ná caithtear tobac; nuair is féadtar???

Cian

Are you sure you're not having the brain fart you referred to in the other thread, Cian? :D Or is it just some very sloppy editing?

You could say nuair a fhéadtar (not is féadtar) instead of nuair is féidir, but that would be the present tense of the autonomous. You couldn't use the imperative there . You might in theory be able to use it in the "Turn" part - but it seems more common in prohibitions: Ná caithtear tobac; ná scoitear.

You'd probably see that sort of sign in American National Parks.

Bear Right! Keep Left!

Sound advice, if there's a bear on the right don't be going over there.

"Bear left" = "go/turn left"

Bear in mind there might just be a hag hiding roung the corner on the side of the road, just waiting to get a lift from you, she's been waiting seven lifetimes for her Manannan and now she's got you in her sights and I wouldn't take that other road going up Sliabh na mBan either. (It's terrible what these tourists have to look out for when they're driving about in Ireland) - it would be best to ask Eddie Lenihan before you go - he won't beat around the bush, in fact he'll avoid it completely.
