I like this one. It translates pretty much directly to "The soul grows according to what is taken from it, not what is added to it."

I'm afraid the suggestion you got elsewhere doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Where did you get it?

I'm afraid I don't agree with Redwolf about this, I think it does make sense - It's greater that the soul becomes through decrease than through increase - it's not as lyrical as Bríd's though.

The "le breis" part in particular seems odd to me.
and "éiríonn" gives the impression that the soul is rising [from the dead] ...to me anyhow.

But wait for further suggestions.

It's awkwardly and confusingly phrased. Because of the "ná" I would understand it rather as "The soul rises (Bríd Mhór seems to think the same) more through 'maolú than through 'breis' ".

That was pretty much my reading of it at first sight, but I don't consider myself that fluent, so I assumed that éiríonn was being used in the sense of becoming, getting.

Before seeing Bríd's, my own poor attempt would have been something

Ní fhásann an t-anam trí bhreis ach trí dhealú.

But I got it in anyway, so tear away.

I think, when "éirigh" is used in that sense, it needs to have something to become ("He is becoming taller" for example: "Éirionn sé níos airde"). I'm not sure you can use it to mean "grow" in a general sense.
