Hi, I need help. A Brendan on here posted that béibí (pl. ~ithe) is a Connacht Irish way of saying baby. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks

It's used in Munster as well and it's feminine an bhéibí, with the plural na béibíos.

Is there anywhere official that states this? Want to use in a business name but want to be able to back myself up as no one has heard of it!!!

It appears in the place name Poll na mBéibíos/Poll na mBabies. (Often the English spelling is used for the plural)

I agree with Breandán it is used in Conamara.

Normally if I was talking about an infant I would say "páiste".

But it used to be fairly/very common to name a child in the family "baby/béibí" as a nickname, then that nickname stayed with them permanently even when adults. I'm not sure when it was used, like was it used for the youngest girl in the family or maybe the girl that had the mother's name.
A boy baby was often named "sonny/sonaí(?)", after the father of the same name. Like you'd say "junior" in English. For example the singer - Sonny Choilm Learaí, or the RnG presenter- Séamus Jimmy Sonny.
I think the practice has died out now.

And what about 'Bab' as in Cait 'Bab' Feiritéar ? I thought that meant babe as well - perhaps only in Corca Dhuibhne ?

As her first name is Cáit, then probably "Bab" is short for "baby", I don't know.
Bab - is often short for Baba (Barbara) in Conemara, which used to be an very common name here.

When I say the practice has died out I mean for today's children. Bab Feiritéar is of the generation when it would be common.
