Good morning all,

I just came across this forum in my research into Gaelic translations for a tattoo I am looking to get.

Since this is the Internet, and since tattoos are permanent, I want to get some confirmation before moving on with the inking.

I am looking to translate "Be Free of Fear" into Gaelic (Standard Irish - CO); although, if anyone on here has the knowledge to also translate into other dialects (GU, GM, GC) so I can see what that looks like, that would be more than excellent.

I'm not sure that this will have much in the way of dialect variation, but we'll see.

Just to get the ball rolling, I'll suggest:

Bí gan eagla: Be without fear/fearless

Or...

Ná bíodh eagla ort: Don't be afraid

Wait for more input, please.

"Saor ó faitíos"

In that case, ó fhaitíos, perhaps?

I would say:

Ná bíodh scáth ná faitíos ort. "Don't be the least bit afraid." (CO and GC)


Another possibility is:

Gan scáth gan eagla "Without fear or dread, boldly, undauntedly" (CO)

Bí gan scáth gan eagla "Be without fear or dread, bold, undaunted" (CO)

My only concern with "faitíos" is it can mean "shyness" (I think that meaning may actually be dialect-dependent, but I'm not sure). "Eagla" seems less ambiguous to my mind.

ya and "faitíos" means "worry" in Munster also.

Yes, that's why I marked faitíos with (GC). There is definitely a bit of dialectal variation with this one, as you can see.

Can anyone confirm the following two that I liked best:

Ná bíodh scáth ná faitíos ort - "Don't be the least bit afraid"

and

Bí gan scáth gan eagla - "Be without fear or dread, bold, undaunted".

You might also consider something like:

Ná bíodh eagla ar bith ort!
