I have been fooling around with Japanese and Tagalog again over the past two weeks.

I found this:

The Japanese writing is excellent. They didn't just use a word frequency program but really put some thought into it and broke it down by category. Is there anything like this for Irish?

The dictionary is good but what I like about it, is that it is fairly small. The Tagalog to English portion is about 260 small sized pages.

I have tried to read dictionaries in the past to study languages. If you can get past "B" you are a certified masochist.

I have made it to "D"

Recently I tried to skip over the words I know and the words I do not recognise at all and I have been trying to study the words I do recognize but am shaky with.

This is working with Tagalog and I would like to attempt the same with Irish.

Can you recommend a good but small dictionary?

There are a few pocket dictionaries, but I recommend Foclóir Póca by an Gúm, the publishing organisation attached to Roinn Oideachas that also publishes the big Ó Dónaill dictionary and Buntús Cainte.

It has lots of good sample sentences and unlike other pocket dictionaries, it has the pronunciation for each word in IPA, which I found very useful.

This book is pretty expensive but I found one for $3 on abebooks.com and I just bought it.

The IPA sounds great too, I am still having trouble reading/pronouncing Irish
