Hello,

I have read that Munster Irish prefers some synthetic forms such as dúnair instead of dúnann tú and dúnaid instead of dúnann siad. I was wondering if this still true today? I am a beginner, and as I have started TY Irish, I feel that I would like to continue learning Munster Irish. Would native speakers from other areas understand these forms? On a side note, are the main dialect groups intelligible to each other?

Many thanks.

The only forms that seem to be in use today in Kerry are these:

cuirim
cuireann tú
cuireann sé/sí
cuirimíd
cuireann sibh
cuirid, cuireann siad, cuirid siad
cuirtar

Maybe the form "cuirir" is still understood in Munster but it looks like it's not used any more in Kerry.
I don't think it's understood outside Munster. I'm not even sure the 3pl form in -id is understood outside Munster (except when followed with "siad" of course).

Their usage gets rarer as the people get younger basically. The most uncommon one is the second person singular -(a)ir, but that's still common enough in expressions like "go bhfuilir".

In the future there is also the ending -f(e)am "we will" which is common in Paróiste Múrach, but I don't think it is mentioned in TYI.
