I am getting married next month in USA to a US citizen - I am the groom! Not the first rodeo for either so will be a small intimate gathering. I would like to say something brief, romantic, nice in Irish to my new wife. Any ideas? Can anyone help with translating a few lines for me? Perhaps point me to a suitable verse from some of the great Irish poets …… etc.

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice?

Thanks

Mikey

Yes - say something romantic and nice in a language you both understand. That way it's much more meaningful. Sin í mo chómairle dhuit.

If it's a religious ceremony, something in Irish from the Song of Songs, or the classic "love" quote from 1 Corinthians might be appropriate. If you'd like something like that, one of us could find it for you from An Bíobla Naofa.

Do you read Irish well enough to be able to pronounce the words correctly, or would you need a sound file?

Thanks Redwolf - it is not religious. I was thinking that perhaps I could find an Irish saying … or pen a few sentences myself and then get some help with translation to Irish??? This will not be a prose piece??

Thanks

I'm having a hard time thinking of a suitable saying (Irish sayings regarding marriage tend to be a bit cynical!). If you want to write something and have us translate it, that would be doable, if it's not too long. I'm going to suggest sticking with prose, though...poetry is extremely difficult to translate well.

I'll ask again...do you read Irish well enough to be able to read from whatever we write, or will you need/want a recording to work with? Your initial message didn't make it clear.

OK...well, let us know what you'd like to say, and we'll get to work on it!

Song of Solomon 1:16: Behold thou art fair, my beloved, and comely. Our bed is flourishing.

Féach, nách álainn tu, a rún, agus deallraitheach go deimhin. I lár na mbláthanna ár leabaidh.
