Hello everyone - my fiancé and I are getting married in May of 2014 and there is Irish in both our backgrounds and we are looking to have a tattoo done for the wedding instead of the traditional rings.

We are looking for the correct spelling and translation of the following into the Irish language

My Friend, My Partner, My Love, My Soul Mate

I've read lots that indicate "soul mate" is a tough translation because it's hard to define. We are looking for something that would be the equivilant of "soul mate" in the Irish language - meaning; we are each others one true love, and perfect match.

Irish doesn't really have a single word that implies "one true love and perfect match." Perhaps...

Mo Chara, Mo Chéile, Mo Ghrá, Mo Shonuachar: My Friend, My (marraige) Partner, My Love, My Spouse.

Aside to other Irish speakers...I've left the "F" capital in "fíorghrá" because all the other nouns are capitalized, but it looks odd to me with the capital "M'". Should it be lowercase, do you think?

Is there not a true "Soul Mate" translation?? That is the one statement that we really want to try to incorporate.

Not really. The idea of soulmates as "fated lovers" or "a perfect love match" is a very recent one, and mostly American at that.

My Fiancé and I have found the verbiage we would like for our wedding tattoo and would appreciate validation on what we've found.

Please validate that the below is correct. . .

Mo Chéile = my partner
Mo shíorghrá = my eternal love
Mo chara = my friend
A stór = my treasure

Also with "my treasure" we were questioning this starting with "a" instead of "mo" as the others.

One more item we are looking for translation for is the phrase = "my everything"

If you are talking to the person, use 'a'. If you are talking about the person, use 'mo'. Which suits the idea for your tattoo?

For "my everything," I suggest "mo chuid den tsaol," which I think I mentioned on the other thread as well. Substituting "a" for "mo," of course, if speaking directly to the person.
