Also btw I wasn't able to find a translation for a Jack O'lantern, do any of you know the translation? also wondering is there any places in Ireland that still use turnips as opposed to pumpkins?

The equivalent in Irish of Jack O'Lantern is Seán na Gealaí (John of the Moon) - not to be confused with Dónall na Gealaí who is the Man of the Moon who was visited by one Daniel O'Rourke who had had too much to drink and made the bad choice of lying down to sleep under the walls of the Púca's Castle. Another personification of Jack is Séadna (pronounced shiana) who you can meet in a well-known story in Munster Irish. Seán na Gealaí wanders around the bog with an old turnip that he uses as a lamp, definitely not a pumpkin which seems to have migrated from Thanksgiving. His sparring partner was the Devil - otherwise known as The Big Man. But I might add that Oíche Shamhna also has a lot to do with a change of season, but again that's another story.

I think the simpler reason is that turnips are simply not widely grown or eaten in America, as they (along with many other things common in Europe) are considered fit only for animals. And our native pumpkins are really so much better suited to lanterns, anyway!

Well I think the idea is that he could hold his turnip lantern in one hand and a stick or perhaps a drink in the other. Even if they were available, trying to walk round with a pumpkin in one hand wouldn't have been very practical.

I don't know. I decided to put both a turnip and pumpkin lantern outside my door this year. The pumpkin looked like a cute party thing while the turnip was much creepier and looked like it could actually keep demons away

I believe it!!! I bet any kind of turnip would be enough to keep kids away ;-) hahahahaha
