Like in Bord na gCon - actually that is probably the only context I've heard it.
Cú - is a particular type of dog - a sighthound - that can be a greyhound or an Irish wolfhound or deerhound etc.
Cú Chulainn - the
hound of Culainn - probably an IrishWolfhound.
In Conamara "gadhar" and "mada" discribes all dogs hounds included.
In Welsh afaik they call all dogs "ci". Which sounds like it's related to "
cú". But I don't know enough Welsh to know if they differienciate between dogs.
