They're not all locked. I don't know why the first couple pages are, but if you go to around page 4, they are unlocked. I thought I was banned too since I got a message 'warning' me, but then I realized my older posts weren't locked so I just went a few pages back and nope, not locked. I'm assuming that it's just them being idiots, but I guess I could be wrong...who knows.

It's very obvious if you're banned. When you go to the forum, you'll find you're logged out. When you try to log in, you'll get a message saying how long you're banned for ("Permanent," "until such-and-such a date," etc.)

You can't tell much by what's locked, as those will show to anyone, whether they're logged in or not. I'm sure there's a lot of spamming going on there right now...they've left themselves wide open in so many ways. If you want to know for sure, page back through the forum until you find a page where nothing is locked and try posting a reply (even just posting something like "test"). If it works, you're not banned. If you are banned, you'll get a message such as what I posted above.

That said, posts are going to sit unanswered there, and that's not really a bad thing. People are going to continue to go there for a long time because it's a forum that's been around for a long time, and it comes up frequently in searches. Here's the thing...if they don't get answered there, one of two things will happen. Either 1) They really didn't care much to begin with, and they'll abandon the search. People like this probably wouldn't have continued to do much with the language in any case. Or 2) They really care, so when they don't get a response there, they'll search further, and they'll find us.

I know it's hard when it seems like all the more experienced translators jump on a request without leaving room for the less experienced. That's something we gradually overcame at IGTF because we had so much activity...we could afford to have the more experienced sit back and give everyone else an opportunity. That's how I learned most of what I know. And I think that will eventually be the situation here as well. Right now, we're all jumping on translations because we want people to know they can trust us to be on the job...we can't afford to wait. But once we've established a critical mass here, that will be less of a problem. It will be more like IGTF used to be. But IGTF as it is now really isn't useful to anyone...translation seeker, learner, or experienced translator.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

I'm just shocked that they haven't bothered to plug the security leaks there. I told them several times during this process that they somehow reinstated past moderators when they banned what was, before the blowup, the current moderation team (myself, Breandán, Bríd, and Tim)...I don't know if they don't believe me, or if they just have no idea how to fix the issue.

I know that, if I owned that forum, especially after the acting moderation team resigned, I wouldn't allow anyone to have moderator priveleges without at least talking to them first.

They say they've brought in their own moderators, but other than "Irish Scout's" activity (which mostly consisted of erasing anything that told our side of the story), I'm sure not seeing any sign of it.

Oh well. I'm well out of it.

I think that is exactly what is happening and it's important that we establish ourselves properly and that people recognise that they will receive reliable answers here fairly quickly.


As I said previously, I completely understand the point you are making so I think you need to make your own threads with your own questions and translation attempts. There is nothing to stop anyone from doing precisely that; in fact it adds to the variety which can only be good for everyone. You started a thread with a joke recently which received a fair few responses and questions. Take a different joke every day or once a week or whenever you want and do the same thing.

If you think that you are starting too many threads, look at my history - I have asked crazy questions, some which sparked all kinds of interesting discussions viewtopic.php?f=28&t=959, others which didn't! It's all part of the way a forum works. We all have one thing in common around here - interest in the language. Anything you do that adds to that is worthwhile. I look forward to your next joke with interest.

You've never been able to delete your own membership at IGTF. That has always been an administrative function...even moderators were unable to do it. Good luck finding an administrator there now who knows how to do it! The powers that be there now seem to be pretty clueless when it comes to running a discussion forum.

You can't delete your own post there either, at least not once there's been a response to it. Only moderators can delete threads.
