I'm actually thinking of applying next year for one of the summer Gaeltacht awards for U.S. citizens through the Fulbright Commission. They'll finance up to six weeks board and tuition (you pay your own transport and living expenses). It might be a challenge for someone in my position, as they favor university students in degree programs, but they tell me that all American students are encouraged to apply, whether they're in university programs or not, and that they had some "non-traditional" students last year.

I'd thought about applying for this summer, but I have so many other committments, and I learned about it a bit late to put a real project together.

Wasn't that what Faber did last year?

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Sounds brilliant. Good luck with that, Redwolf.

I don't know. I only just met Faber late last year, when I got active on Facebook. I should ask him!

I'd really hoped to apply for this summer, but it doesn't seem fair to put everyone else's plans on hold while I wait to find out (also I committed to a couple of performances this summer before I learned about this possibility, and while I probably could get out of them...in fact, folks would be very understanding...I really don't like to do things that way).

Might as well ask here since it seems to be the best place to ask a low brow question, but what is the difference between ucht, brollach and cíoch exactly. I know they are all different words for breast, but what exactly is the difference?

How is a thread I started the best place for 'low brow' questions? How offended should I be? Just because a perfectly civilised question about shit descended into anarchy, it doesn't prevent me feeling offended by that remark. Hmmm! Low brow indeed! There are plenty of places perfectly suited to low brow questions around here!

Except maybe the thread about the spirit of an explorer as that is getting quite high brow.......

Surely a thread with a title like this one is a place for all kinds of shite.

And we all know that there's plenty of that to go around!
In the meantime, An Lon Dubh is no closer to the answer to the breasty/chesty question. Not very helpful, but a bra is 'cíochbheart'. (parcel for the breasts) and a breast of chicken is 'brollach sicín'. Slightly off topic, I suspect....

Just my general impression but I think the meaning gets narrower from ucht to brollach to cíoch.

Both men and women have an ucht. It's more like "chest". Can also mean "lap".

Brollach is the "breast" in both the older meaning of "chest" and the more recent meaning of "mammary". Guess it depends on context.

Only women have a cíoch. It's more like a "mammary".

That's just my impression. It may need correction ...

Or to put it in the most low brow terms I can think of for the subject:

"Cíoch" is a boob. "Brollach" is the the place where the boobs reside, and can be used to describe the entire boobish area, whether or not the individual in question actually HAS boobs.
