Dear Irish language forum, I am in search of a person who speaks Irish and German. We are a small subitling company in Germany and received an Irish film that needs German subtitles and a translation for the dubbed version. Is there a member of the forum who speaks and writes fairly good German and is interested in working on this? Kind regards, Henrike

There may be a member on the forum willing to work on this, but it sounds like a fairly large project. Generally you would need to employ professional translators for such a project.

Another potential option, I know there are relatively well established Celtic departments in German universities like Bonn. You might want to contact the faculty in some of these institutions and ask if they can point you towards anybody who might be interested in working on such a project.

Thank you for your reply. The film does not have a lot of dialogue, which helps, but yes, of course it would be ideal to have a professional translator, it's just that we haven't been able to find one, despite reaching out in many directions. Usually people checking subtitles that were done on the basis of a third language need half a day or so to do so. Translating the film into German, by listening to the film and writing down the translation would take about three days work. (if the person has a good computer set up, types fast and writes well in German). I can explain in more detail if there is someone interested. Kind regards Henrike

Why don't you post some lines from the dialogue?

Dear all, unfortunately there is no Irish script, but only an English dialogue list, so the work will consist of listening to the spoken dialoge in the film and writing a German translation next to the English in the list. However I followed the advice in the first answer and contacted the department of Celtic studies in Bonn, an they already responded saying that two women from ireland working as part time lecturers would be interested in doing the translation. I will know tomorrow if this will work out and will post it on the forum. Thanks Henrike

Well, that is the CONSTANT stupidity in Ireland, where Irish-language films and programmes are normally only subtitled in English. People have pressed for Irish subtitles, which are now available for a few (hardly any) programmes. In language learning, subtitles in the language itself are required. The polyglots on Youtube swear by this approach, and there are a number of channels, e.g. Russian Progress, that adopt this: hundreds of podcasts in Russian are available with PDFs of the exact wording of the podcasts. There are similar channels for many languages, e.g. InnerFrench, where the Youtube podcasts have full subtitles in the original language. Only the Irish simply refuse to do this.

I also found this quite strange, an Irish production company producing a film in Irish not being willing or able to provide an Irish transcript of the dialogues... I had a reply from the Celtic Studies department in Bonn (which was suggested here) and aparently two lecturers of Irish are happy to translate the dialogue of the film for us. Thank you for your comments and all the best to you. Kind regards Henrike
