I dont know why they dont make some effort to clean up the audio files, it was the same on the Doegen recordings.

After a half our messing around on a open source Audio program I was able to turn crackly almost incomprehensible audio into something where the background noise was hardly noticeable. Youd think they could find a professional who could do this properly.

That was my first thought too. A pro could make it totally clear like it was recorded yesterday, but of course, that would reflect a level of engagement gov people are not known for.

PS, the Irish used in these stories is very useful for learners, I think, as it often repeats and 're-casts' the information and the old people, like of teeth not withstanding,usually have excellent locution

They could be make very interesting learning tools allright if you could make them out a bit better.

I can see only two recordings from areas outside today's Gaeltachts.
I wonder if there are any extensive recordings from area's which still had some Irish speakers at Independence.
Such as Limerick
East and West Clare .
East Cork
East Galway
Roscommon
East Mayo
Sligo
Leitrim
Cavan
Monaghan.

or was it just too low a priority at the time?

Apart from the recording over of stuff (due to the cost of magnetic tape ), I'd say there's a lot more stuff lying around or semi-lost. Of course you know of http://doegen.ie/

Personally, I'd say it's an embarrassment to the Establishment that Ireland was once Gaelic and not all loyal yeomen to the Crown
