I am certain I will leave out something so I apologize in advance. I am working on a tattoo (my first) and have two quotes I want to incorporate. My daughters names will be included as well. My Grandfather is from a small town in Northern Ireland and used to speak some dialect of Gaelic, I was very young so I don't remember much about it except loving hearing him speak it when he did. I would like to do the quotes, if possible, in an appropriate dialect of Gaelic if there is one for that area. The quotes are:

"For those I love I will sacrifice"

and

"Love may be delayed but not destroyed"

I am completely open to variations of the wording as long as the message is captured. Thank you in advance for the assistance, it is greatly appreciated.

"Ar son na daoine a bhfuil grá agam dóibh, diúltóidh dom féin" (literally "For the sake of those whom I love, I will deny myself")

Hopefully we can come up with a shorter (and more idiomatic) way of saying this! I know we did it a time or two on the old site, but I don't go over there anymore.

Thanks...I'm so glad you weighed in on this! I'd flirted with "íobairt," but thought it might sound too much like I was planning to slaughter a calf on an altar! This is when it's especially nice to get a native speaker's take.

I am in awe of how intellectual you all are. I am a reasonably intelligent person but I am not sure I put as much thought into English as you put into this language. Very impressive. I have a few weeks before final design sign offs so I will wait and see what else comes up. Again, very much appreciated.

That's translation for you (in any language, really). Often literal translation doesn't work (though sometimes it does). It's very possible to write something that's grammatically correct and "works" from a dictionary standpoint, but doesn't actually make much sense. That's when it's really nice to have a native speaker such as Bríd weigh in.
