I was just listening to the pronunciation of the word sleamhain on forvo - http://www.forvo.com/word/sleamhain/#ga

I know the word but have a different pronunciation of it , is it pronounced differently else where from the example given above. There is a very good chance that my recollection of its pronunciation is more of a anglicization of the word.

more like of shlay-bh-awn, if that makes any sense to ye.

If I remember well, that word is pronounced roughly "shlyah-win" in Donegal.

I have heard it pronounced two ways - shlown (as in clown) and shlawn.

That is fairly close to how I say it, with a slight OW sound.

A Bhríd - that comes from using the blasted thing on the bogs between Spiddal and Inverin! I suppose nowadays its all oil heating and electricity.

Ahh do you mean "sleán" - the special spade for cutting turf?
That is pronounced as "shlawn".


Personally I burn coal in the range. I haven't had oil since February, too expensive. Turf is expensive too unless you have your own strip and cut it yourself.

Maybe the time has come for people to open up their old bog strips again. Do they remember where they were? I imagine I could probably pick out the strips around Aille East and West (Cnoc na hAille)(Knock) of the various Ó Coisdealbha families including Mairtín Davy's father and grandfather. Bríd Eilís pronounced the word on forvo mentioned by the original poster, and so you can be sure you are getting the correct Conamara pronunciation.

One of my brothers uses the strip my Da had. That's no good to me though.
