Just a quick question. Tá grá agam duit. means I love you. / I have love for you., right? So if you want to translate something like I can't love you like you want me to. which I guess could be simplified to I can't love you like that. into Irish, what would that look like? Is Ní féidir liom grá a bheith agam duit mar sin. even anywhere close to it?

I think, in that case, I'd use "tabhair" rather than "bí":

Ní féidir liom grá [mar sin?] a thabhairt duit.

I hate ending sentences with ag iarraidh, but then again it's not my style to use ag iarraidh :P Just for variet I'll suggest "mar a bhfuil uait" as an alternative ending. If that's not said up north maybe it's worth suggesting "Ní thig liom grá a thabhairt duit mar a bhfuil uait" for the sake of consistency.

should be "mar atá uait" then, because "mar a bhfuil" means "where is" (eg. "fan mar a bhfuil tú" = stay where you are).

But tá... uaim is rather "I need" rather than "I want/wish", as far as I know.

I'm wondering if instead of saying "atá tú ag iarraidh", you could say "mar atá tú á iarraidh orm"? But I'm not sure.

Would be "as you ask it to me", not exactly the same in my opinion.

Thanks for all the suggestions and inputs, everyone. I see why I should use the verbal noun thabhairt now instead of bheith because it is like saying I can't GIVE you a love like that. instead of I can't HAVE a love like that for you. or something.

Cha dtig is new to me, although I haven't been studying Irish that long and I am primarily studying from Irish language grammar books that you can get from Barnes and Nobles here in the States. They teach "standardized Irish" I guess. Is this a dialect form? Just curious.

Yes..."cha dtig" is a form you'd see in Ulster.

Need vs want/wish you are correct actually. I thought of using "mar atá" mar a bhfuil just came out, maybe it's something grammatical with which I'm not familiar. Absolutely open to correction...
