I'm sure Bríd and Insect are right – they're probably not going to change what they do, no matter how many people sign the petition. But for me, it was a choice between signing the petition or doing nothing at all – so I signed the petition.

Well, you could go hardcore :P It's funny, a few months ago I started looking into Richard Stallman again, and watching a lot of his talks etc. And then the whole NSA thing blew up! The thing is, it's hard to disagree with a lot of what he says (he is a total hippy, though) and his views are too idealistic IMO.

I don't think I'm as interested in this topic as Richard Stallman. Truth to tell, I've old heard of him and have never actually read anything that he's ever written. Now that you've mentioned this, I'll have to check into it. Thanks for the heads up!

People like that are usually the only ones worth listening to!

It might be "slacktivism" to sign a petition and then do nothing more, but the existence of a petition can help raise awareness of an issue and lead to more people actually doing something about it (however small the number.)

In contrast, the real slackers are those who don't do anything positive AND sit around putting shit on those who do.

I used to think that online petitions were useless. But now I think they serve a purpose in that they provide a way for people to raise the topic with others and get people thinking about it. It's awkward to say to people out of the blue "Hey, I'm concerned about this issue. Have you given it any thought?" But it's socially acceptable to say "Hey, I've signed this petition. Do you want to sign it?" Which is exactly what I've done in this thread.

Of course, a petition alone probably isn't going to change a politician's mind about how to vote. But it might get them worried enough that they will canvas their constituents about it.

Also, people who sign online petitions may be doing other things as well, like donating to the EFF, but they don't necessarily talk about it.
