My younger sister and I, both of Irish decent, are interested in getting Irish Gaelic tattoos on each of our side rib cages. We would like it to be a simple, pretty saying that we can have "split" into two, the first portion written on one of us and the second portion written on the other.

Do any of the experts/translators out there have good suggestions of a Gaelic saying that we could possibly use? I have a ton of English-written sayings that we could potentially have translated, but know that it would sound better, and mean more, if it was authentic and a true representation of our heritage and friendship.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

If spliting a saying isn't really a good idea, one quote I'm interested in possibly having translated is: "Happy girls are the prettiest girls."

Because my original post doesn't seem to be getting the response I was hoping for, I am actually requesting the translations for a few more sayings rather than asking if anyone knew of some off-hand. The translations I'm requesting do not need to be in any specific dialect, though something with the Gaelic tongue would be ideal:

Happy girls are the prettiest girls (yes, I'm still awaiting that one!)

Live the life you love. Love the life you live. (My sister's request.)

Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.

I'm assuming that you meant that the girls are prettier because they're happy (but maybe you meant they're happier because their pretty)

Thank you Mick! Yes, I meant the first assumption, where girls are prettier because they are happy (though I'm sure one could argue the second assumption as well, haha!) It's a pretty well-known quote said by actress Audrey Hepburn, and my sister, mom and I love it. It 's simple, yet meaningful. I like the way your interpretation looks so hopefully it's correct! It also looks like a good length to be written on one's side ribcage.

I'd like to see if anyone is able to translate the others as well, but I appreciate the assistance nonethless!

Haha, thank you for the reassurance pennyrat! I do realize they have real jobs, though it seems like translation could be a full-time job from what I've seen thus far! I was just simply saying that I worried my question was too heavy-weighted or confusing for the translators to know what I was really asking for, since I'd seen questions posted later than mine being replied to prior to mine. I just wanted to ensure I was clear enough and gave the correct information in order for someone to help me (like Mick just did!)

Erin, Your first request was vague, a saying for you and your sister. Since none of us know you, it's hard to make a suggestion. I think you'll find a quicker response to your specific request. Translators here respond to requests they feel surest of quicker and maybe the ones answered ahead of yours were much easier to do.

You can't translate this one directly because firstly it will loose its alliteration and secondly its not compatible. I've had to tweak them:

Caith an saol is mian leat agus caith é le sonas

Spend/Live the life you wish and live it with happiness

or just:

Caith an saol le súp (GM. Kerry)*3/ le sonas/ le ceol

Spend/Live live with happiness/ music (idiomatic)

or simply:

Bain ceol as an saol

Take/Sieze the music out of your life, idiomatic for live life to the full

or

Bain sonas/súp as an saol

Take/Sieze the happiness out of life


(c) Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart

Pé áit go dtéir/dtéann tú, téir ann le croí lán (GM)*2

Wherever place you go, go there with a full heart

or

Cibé áit a dtéann tú, téir ann le croí lán (CO)*3

It sounds strange with having whatever place in En

Wherever place you go, go there with all your heart

It sounds odd saying wherever and then saying place in English. But it is required in Irish for it to make sense
