I always thought "Ba" was the past and conditional of the copula?

That's right (although sometimes is is left unchanged in past tense phrases) ... but either you're missing Errigal's point or I'm missing yours!

This is another way of saying Is é... which gets around the TSF problem, and which I find useful for the future tense in particular.

He'll be the best student in the class before long - Beidh sé ar an duine is fearr sa rang sar i bhfad (sul i bhfad/sara fada).

I think I missing Errigal's and your point

. I never heard of using "ar an" instead of the copula. Is that a new thing? if not what dialect would use that over the copula?

so just to clarify, would it be?

"Bead/Beidh mé ar an duine is aoirde sa rang"

or is it wrong to say: "Beidh mé an duine is aoirde sa rang?"

and he was the tallest person in the class:

"Ba é an duine is aoirde sa rang
"
or

"Bhí sé ar an (n)duine is aoirde sa rang"

What would be the way of phrasing that with "bí" be? I wouldn't use that at all I'd say

"Ba mhaith liom ' bheith an duine is aoirde sa rang"

Can you use "ar an" for I would like to be a teacher?

Yes

Definitely wrong - TSF error. I suppose you could stick in 'mar' instead of 'ar' to make it work.

There's a question (in my mind, anyway!) about whether you should say ba instead of is in the second part of that sentence, especially since ba is used at the start. Like I said, sometimes is is left alone in past tense sentences AFAIK but where ba is already used earlier in the same sentence, I think it's different.

Grand. Some might prefer ba instead of is here too, but I think it's okay.

To me that's no different to saying Tá mé an duine... which is a clear TSF error.

I can't see how. You use ar an to refer to the something -' the tallest' for example.

The last sentence above is of course correct.

Ba mhaith liom bheith ar an duine is airde... or 'the first '-ar an chéad duine

Another example: Tá sé ar fhear chomh maith agus a chonaic mé riamh
