Dia daoibh, a Dhaoine!
I was reading from one of my books today, and ran across a sentence that I can’t quite make out. Maybe one of you knows?
It’s from “An Ghaeilge ó Lá go Lá” (Scéal 25):
“Ghearr m’athair a mhéar.
Cuireadh sé ghreim inti. Cuireadh bindealán ar a mhéar agus chneasaigh sí.”
The “cuireadh” in the last sentence is clearly past autonomous (A bandage
was put on his finger and it healed.) …
But the first “cuireadh” (in the sentence highlighted pink) can’t be past autonomous because the subject pronoun “sé” was used instead of “e.” …So the only other option is that it is 3rd person imperative. From my research, I gather that 3rd person imperative can be used like “should”…but that doesn’t really fit here to me…
“He should put stitches in it. A bandage was put on his finger and it healed.” …I guess it could work, but it sounds kinda off to me.
Can anyone provide a different perspective/insight on this? Thank you if so!
