Trying put the following lines of a poem in Irish:

Let her be strong
Let her be free
Bless her always
So mote it be

Would the following be correct?


Bíodh sí laidir
Bíodh sí saoirse
Beannachtaí uirthi i gcónaí
Bíodh sé amhlaidh

Any corrections and/or suggestions?

I'm never sure of these things. Does it depend on the intention of the speaker?

"Bíodh" may be alright.

These may be good:

Go raibh sí laidir, saoirse
Lig di bí laidir, saoirse

The third sentence is alright I think.

Foclóir has "Bíodh amhlaidh" for "So be it".

Saoirse is a noun (freedom), the adjective is saor.

Would using "lig do" in this case be preferable to "bíodh"? The same? Anything else?

I don't know.
It depends on the intended meaning.

"Lig" is an imperative 2nd person. So it addresses directly a certain person. If meant so, "lig" is correct. Lig di bheith saor. (e.g. said to a slave owner, a police officer, or to an overprotective mother)

But in English, "let" (though being also 2nd person) is used for a 3rd person imperative, too.
Not an addressee should really "let" something happen here but the 3rd person (sí) should do/be something. Irish has a 3rd person imperative for this: Bíodh sí saor.

Like Tim suggested I think the subjunctive might be better than the imperative in this case.
But you can use the imperative if you like.

Go raibh sí láidir
Go raibh sí saor
Go raibh beannachtaí uirthi i gcónaí
Go raibh sé amhlaidh / or Bíodh sé amhlaidh (imperative)

May she be strong....
etc.

Doh!!! I knew that!!

The intended meaning of the first two lines are:

May she be strong
May she be free
.....

Essentially, it's a prayer that in the future, this particular girl will enjoy strength and freedom.
Does this clarification change any of the suggestions y'all have given?
