Hi,

I'm trying to say good luck to our under sixteen Tattyreagh St Patricks girls. Not sure if what I have below is correct?

Ádh mór ar ár gcailíní faoi shé bliana déag An Táite Riabhach Naomh Pádraig.

Sorry for the delay.

What's the club's official name in Irish? I would have thought 'Naomh Pádraig An Táite Riabhaigh' (= genitive).
The use of 'ár gcailiní' might cause grammatical complications (I'm not totally sure), but I think there's less chance of this if 's'againn' is used instead. No problems at all of course if we just omit 'our' and leave it as 'the girls'. What you have for 'under sixteen' is correct, though I would just put 'faoi 16' myself.

So, my version: 'Ádh mór ar chailiní faoi-16 (s'againn) Naomh Pádraig An Táite Riabhaigh'.

Open to correction. Maybe someone else will comment.

The club itself use An Táite Riabhach Naomh Pádraig. That's not to say that is correct. My Irish isn't of a high enough standard to know.

Do you think this is incorrect?

I was adding to my previous post when you posted this. Yes, to me that seems wrong, but if that's the official version...

Actually, I've checked some of theGAA club names. When a proper name, such as Eoghan Rua, Naomh Pádraig, Emmet etc is used like 'Rovers', 'Wanderers' etc, with the name of the town, it seems to be used in apposition. So 'Cláirseacha an Oirthear' but 'An Oirthear Naomh Pádraig' (if such a team as this latter one existed).

We could be ok with the name of the club so. If anyone else has an opinion would be good to hear. It's an interesting one!

Was worried about using ár and hadn't thought of s'againn so that's great thanks Errigal!

You'd still have to use the genitive, I think: '...chailiní faoi 16 (s'againn) An Táite Riabhaigh Naomh Pádraig'. I say "I think", because while there's a rule about not putting a pair of nouns in apposition into the genitive form, I don't think it applies to the place name here, though it does apply to Naomh Pádraig.
