Hello,

I apologize if this is already here somewhere and I've missed it.

Could somebody, possibly, tell me the correct pronunciation of "meisnech."

Is it mish- nock like misneach would be? It's different, right?

Thanks a bunch.

It's miss-spelled. It should be "misneach".

Is "meisnech" an Old Irish word, or is there a spelling mistake? Normally "ech" isn't possible in Modern Irish.

Btw "misneach" isn't pronounced mish-nock but mish-nyahh or mish-nuKH (kh here = the SPanish jota, a throaty sound). "ch" is never pronounced "ck" in Irish. According to the dialect it's either the sound of the Spanish jota, or an h-sound (which all English speakers know obviously).

I mis-read I though it was "meishneach" when in reality there were two mistakes... Maybe it's not meant to be misneach? Gotta await on OP to confirm I suppose.

There's no "nock" in Irish.

meisnech (Old Irish) /meshnech/
misneach (Modern Irish) /mishnach/

So... Something like "mish nyeh" for the old Irish?

Right. I actually new that prior to today, but I guess I read a bad pronunciation and didn't make the connection. Thank you.

No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to remember the differences like that.

The old Irish pronunciation of "meisnech" would be "mesh-nuKH" (kh = Spanish jota), roughly.

The early Old Irish pronunciation of meisnech in IPA is /'mʲɛʃ.nʲɛx/, but later the unstressed "e" would centre to a schwa sound, and the stressed "e" rises to an "i" due to the strong palatal/slender quality of both initial m- and following -s-, yielding misnech /'mʲɛʃ.nʲəx/.

In modern Irish, the standard spelling is misneach, and three samples of the major dialectal pronunciations are as follows:
Ulster: /'mʲiʃ.nʲah/ (something like MISH-nyah)
Connacht: /'mʲiʃ.nʲəx/ (like MISH-nyuhkh, note the "y" being just a quick glide)
Munster: /mʲiʃ.'nʲax/ (like mish-N(y)AHKH, the slender (y) glide even lighter, note also ultimate stress)

Just for comparison, the standard Scottish Gaelic pronunciation is below (same spelling):
Gaelic: /'miʃ.Nʲɪç/ (with a tense n sound, note the final guttural)
