So, I have a quote that I'm looking to get tattooed, and I really wanted it to be in Irish. My mom's side of the family came to the US during the potato famine, and I have always had an interest in that part of my heritage. I thought that getting this done in Irish would be a good tribute to that.
The quote is "My illness is not my identity. My chemistry is not my character."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For the second part I need to ask what you mean by "chemistry".

By chemistry I mean the chemicals that are in the human body.

Hmm, I mean I could say the literal word for chemistry but I don't think that would get what you mean across. That's fine though, translation isn't always about literal translation, it's about *meaning*. "déantús" should work. It means something like "makeup", not makeup you put on your face, more like what your body is made up of.

All that being said, this should work for the second part.

Wait for more input, especially on the second one I've given you. Someone else might be able to tweak it to make it more eloquent.

"déantús" would turn the meaning into "the way he was produced" - I don't think that would hit the mark - thinking about his (or her) parents in a hot night …

I guess "meitibileacht" should do the job, although it sounds a bit artificial. On the other hand so does "chemistry".

As for "nádúr" - possible, but a little bit far fetched. "carachtar" is the literal translation, but I'd use "aigne" - as much as "character", "mind", "disposition" as in "aigne an duine" = "a person’s mind or way of thinking".

This could be wrong, but I'll give it a go anyway:
