I've used this forum to check translations for a tattoo before and was really pleased.

First thing I wanted to ask is, how accurate is Google translate? I've tested it by translating my current tattoo and it comes out exactly the same - so I assume it's right.

The phrases I'd like to be translated are below and any help is really appreciated! I know it's at my own risk

-- "Good night, God bless Dad"
-- "God bless Dad"

Do not, in any way, shape or form, rely on Google Translate. It's positively awful for Irish. If it matched your current tattoo (and if your current tattoo is correct), you were very lucky.

For your phrases above, are they meant to be addressed to Dad? if so...

"Oíche mhaith. Go mbeannaí Dia thú, a Dhaid" or "Oíche mhaith agus go mbeannaí Dia thú, a Dhaid" "Good night. God bless you, Dad" and "Good night and God bless you, Dad"(You can't use a comma where you had one there. You need a full stop or a conjunction. You DO need a comma before "Dad," if Dad is the one being addressed.)

"Go mbeannaí Dia thú, a Dhaid" God bless you, Dad.

If Dad is the one saying "Good night and God bless, it will be different, so please do clarify it for us.

Are they all correct? Also, how are they pronounced?

Out of interest, Google translate gets it right (or as I think it's right) - can anyone tell me what my current tattoo says for definite?

It means "Do not be afraid …"

It's the beginning of psalm 49:16 of the bible. Although it is not totally correct. The first word has to be "Ná" = "not", not "na" = "the". Thus strictly speaking this mistake would make the translation gibberish.

True, but easily corrected, fortunately. A tattoo artist should be able to insert the missing fada.

Often google translate is decent at Irish into English, yes. But I have never seen it produce something good from English into Irish. This means it can be useful for quickly getting the gist of longer texts in Irish, but otherwise is limited in its usefulness. As will all google translate languages, though, it improves every day. Come back in ten years and it will probably be pretty good!



There are many dialects of Irish with different ways of pronouncing the same words (just like English!). Also, there are many sounds in Irish that are not the same in English. The best way to get a sense of how it is pronounced is probably to use:

This allows you to choose either Gweedore or Connemara pronunciation synthesis. I have listened to your quote in both and it sounds good. Take a listen!

Often abair.ie does better with single words than with whole phrases...good to hear it's doing well with this one! Just in case you also need a phonetic guide, for Ulster it would be roughly "EE-hyeh wy. Guh MAN-ee DEE-uh hoo, a Yaj."

In terms of dialect, I'd be looking for Connacht as my family are from Roscommon/Mayo.
