Im putting together a tribute for my grandfather and wanted to breakdown our family coat of arms and have it translated into Gaelic.

Our surname is Croke and from the research I've done online I believe the following words need to be translated:

Devotion
Victory in tournament
Flower of Light
Wise Defence
Christian
Grief
Generosity

If you happen to know anything about family crests and are able to dispute the research I have done(can't trust the internet)feel free to let me know!

I don't know if you realise this, but usually the mottos for coats of arms in Ireland weren't in Irish as it wasn't considered to be a noble language. They would be in Latin or sometimes in Norman French or in English and they were awarded for services to the English crown, not particularly in the interests of the Irish. There are bogus companies out there providing bogus services in this field, though there does happen to be an official office in Dublin that is supposed to deal with this kind of thing. One thing they don't do is granting new coats of arms, they can only verify whether existing ones are genuine or not.

I was under the impression that they no longer grant coats of arms, but apparently they still do.

As was said above, they have no real legitimacy -such titles were given as part of the political expediency of surrender and regrant policy in the Tudor era, don't have a strong legal standing in modern Ireland, are only of real value to those who are the direct descendants of the original bestowee. Most of us there are the descendants of multiple Irish kings, but so what? They were all failures -most of them ignorant, incompetent, abject failures. Young girls hiding camera film of Black and Tan movements during 1919-1921 in their shopping baskets did more for Ireland than most of those 'Laochra'.

We need to keep Irish and remember the past. But late Gaelic Ireland was a shambles and it was quickly given up by the population then, so I wouldn't romanticise it now.
